On March 9th and 10th, Steve Newton and I attended a Bicycle Safety Workshop spon- sored by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and Consumer Product Safety Commission at Sea Tac. I attended the Thursday session and Steve, the Friday session.

During coffee break, 1 went down the street to the Washington State Citizen's
Advisory Committee on Traffic Safety. There, I testified to the Roadway Subcommittee
on "adequate" smooth-paved shoulders (at least four feet wide) on all highway construc-
tion and re-construction’ and also on bicycle use of Interstate Highways. My testimony
was well received and a worthwhile discussion ensued about the Bicycle's role in
transportation. |

Back to the Safety Workshop---Steve and I thought it was beneficial, although we
had heard and discussed much of it before. We believe it is an area we should be
involved in.

We are making some headway; the Mayor has consented to read a proclamation to the City Council if we — = 14-21 make one, and Gail Branfeld has consented to draw BICYCLE this up for us. We now need MORE ENTHUSIASM and IDEAS such as Gary Singleton's offer to have racers

The Department of Transportation intends to amend its rules, allowing bicycles on

_1-5 from mile post 23.01 to mile post 27.42 (Woodland to Kalama) and from mile post 116.70 to mile post 119.01 (North Nisqually to DuPont) during daylight hours only. The

amended rule would also allow bicycles on 1-90 from mile post 254.02 to mile post 257.69 during daylight hours only from May lst through September 30th.

Anyone wis hing to comment on the proposed amendments may do so by writing to the Department of Transportation, Highway Administration Building, Olympia, Washington 98504. Comments must be received prior to May 12, 1978.

To assist those persons who are uncertain
about the responsibilities of ride leaders,
the following suggestions are offered:

1. Before the ride, the route should
be checked for road changes or problems.

should be prepared for the Tour Captain no —— ee later than the last Wednesday of the month prior to the ride. The description should contain the meeting place and time, ride area,

difficulty and length of ride, information regarding lunch stops, car pooling, etc.

1. All rides should have sufficient copies of a map, log or both.

4. Rides should start on time. The folks who arrive on time alae)
will, if possible, conveniently post a map for the riders who must <<
arrive late. Even Jack Williams isn't immune to a flat tire en route —/

1. All rides should have a sweep (generally, the ride leader) 5

to ride with the last person, to insure that all riders have help‘when needed. If desired, the leader can ask someone to volunteer as the sweep.

6. All riders should fill out a sign-up sheet with their names, addresses and phone numbers at the beginning of the ride - for emergency use and future reference.

7. At the start of the ride, the leader should brief riders on safety suggestions, potential hazards, plans for stops and regrouping; and other items of interest or help

to riders.

8. After the ride, the sign-up sheet should be forwarded to the Tour Captain or
Newsletter Editor.

In 1898, Charlie Miller pedaled 2,093.4 miles at Madison Square Garden during a 6-day-long track race. Many of his rivals were hospitalized for exhaustion. i.

Living in the West means you can come to tea in your blue
jeans with yellow ribbons in your hair.

- Little Amber was sure 1 was taking her to Scotland on March
12th. TI hope she doesn't know where Scotland is, because that's
not where we went! A whole gang of cyclists met at Purdy Shop-
ping Center for the ride around Jong Lake. Mick changed his
rear sprockets to super-lows for pulling Amber and the carriage
up the Olalla hills.

I loved dragging along behind them. "T'm thirsty", Amber
complained in the middle of the Olalla hill. I wonder if wat-
ching me made her feel that way!

Think of poor Ben, Amber, riding a track bike in a fixed gear! He had recovered enough by the time Tuesday's bike class rolled around to tell us what a great time he had. Lisa rode Frank's Eisentraut for a while to get the feel of it. I think she prefers her Schwinn for now, judging from the report!

I was happy to see Eldon, Virginia, and Ray and Ann Sumner with us, too. Now I'm sure Spying is here again! In bidding goodbye mid-route, we had to tell them that Amber was promised a picnic, so not to worry about us. We spread our warm blanket out along- side the road and stayed just long enough to have our favorite turkey-cream cheese- avocado sandwiches with water and fruit. Looking at the map, we saw that the road back was unusually straight for the area. "Tf it's straight, that means probably no hills," said Mick. Wrong. One straight hill. But we were warmed up to it after all the previous ones.

Just as we were coming back to the lot, it began to sprinkle. It felt so good for some reason. Like wanting to open my mouth to catch the drops.

Amber was scared going down those hills, she declared.

We are going to Scotland when she's old enough to ride herself and tie her own plaid
ribbons in her hair. .

“Mommy, Aunt Mary Ann's taking me to Scotiand this weekend!"

“No, honey, that's when you're older."

"But she just called and said we're going---"

Racing Report

RESULTS

So far this month we have done fairly well. Our first three races were at the course by Issaquah. They were all handicap races; the Category three riders started five | minutes before the twos, and the twos five minutes before the ones.

The first week Happy took fifth place and five dollars in the giant pack sprint. I led out the sprint, sure I was going to win. I could almost feel that eighteen dollar cash prize in the palm of my hand when suddenly a mob of bicyclists surged by, leaving

me totally demoralized.

The next week we came back dressed to kill in our new jerseys. Our competitors cowered in fear before the race; horrified by our tremendous appearance. Almost no one recognized us or even wanted to! They probably figured we were a top foreign team. Phil and I both made it into the decisive break-away group. We caught all but two of the Category three riders just before the finish line. I took fourth, and Phil got eighth. Gary won the pack sprint, with Ron near the front of the pack.

On Sunday, the nineteenth,

the Category three riders were never caught. Bill took

fifth place. Gary, Happy and I were all at the front of the Category one and two pack

sprint.

Some of our riders went down to Oregon to race in the Donald Road Race. This same day, in the Category three race, Weldon took second, Kirk took fifth, and Mark was involved

in a crash that took down half

pack. Later, he had to go to the hospital to get sewn up. In the Veterans' race,

Ernie took fifth.

We also have been holding races at our Hilltop criterium course. The first race
was won by Gary. It was a last-man-out race. We had a lot of fun, and there was a
pretty good turn out. I hope even more people will show up in the future.

REGISTRATION: At The City Park in Orting, Wash. on HWY 162; 40 miles south of Seattle, 9 miles south of Puyallup and 22 miles southeast of Tacoma.

ENTRY FEE: $3.00 for ages 16 and above. $2.50 for ages 15 and under. A 50¢ discount will be given to entries postmarked on or before April 15th. A custom patch designed for this ride this year is awarded to all finishing riders.

FOOD: Entry fee does not include food but there are restaurants, grocery stores and taverns throughout the area expecting you.

BREAKDOWNS: Sagwagons and mechanic's services will be available for emergencies only.

THE COURSE: Is generally level with a few gently rolling hills the last 20 miles. Riders can again choose between 20, 50 and 100 mile rides.

THE WEATHER: Will be sunny and warm with beautiful views of Mt. Rainier throughout the ride.
