Bike ride around Marine Drive, stop at Sealand.

Sunday, May 29th: Bike ride to Butchart Gardens. Those who can't come on Saturday
will arrive on Sunday to join the main group. :
Monday, May 30th: AM - Shopping and sight seeing downtown Victoria
PM - Return trip to Port Angeles - Tacoma.

The Daffodil Century turned into a Marathon Picnic for Mick and me. We packed our Willow basket full of chicken sandwiches, apples, oranges, bananas, raw vegetables and our favorite Stilton cheese. 1 like to think we're the Mole and the Water Rat right out of Kenneth Graham's delightful novel "The Wind in the Willows".

The riders started arriving at checkpoint two at 8:35. After saying "Hil, "Nice Day" and "Enjoy your ride" about 100 times, I started feeling awfully dumb. Not many like to stop the first time around the course, I guess. Here I am trying to figure out where they get the energy to just keep riding!

The owner of Barneey's brought us hot coffee in a thermos. It was sunny out, but
chilly enough to welcome the brew! The rain passed at 7:00 A.M. and didn't return to
bother us all day.

Eventually, our old favorites started coming along - Ken and Mary, Karen, Rosanne, Anita, Frank and Lisa and Ruthie, Steve and Phyllis.

Ruthie had two flat tires on the way to Barneey's, both which she repaired herself. Some racers from the Velocipede Club cringed when they saw her Jack Taylor lying in the ditch. Who could treat it like that! Then they wanted to know what the orange thing on her handlebars was. I can hear her casually remarking that it's a radio!

Bob Dahlke swung around in the Sag Wagon with sandwiches and big stories about his mountain-climbing escapades. While we chatted with people we knew, I passively watched the sights roll by. There was a woman from the Cascade Club wearing a cast on her foot! Riding the back of a tandem, but still! Bill Stevensen and his family rode their bicycle built for three. A couple from the Kitsap Bicycle Club had their two-month old baby along.

Then there's the kid from Puyallup with the cut-off thermal underwear who dves 150 miles!

That clown Larry Murray from the Cascade Club stopped and had us laughing all over

again about last year's jokes. (He and his party

Ben and Gary and Gayle all arrived in their cars to check out Checkpoint two! Ben scrammed before he'd tell us the reason for driving the course! That track bike must be out of order! . Gary's waiting for the next ride around Vashon to get in condition for the season. Vashon's his favorite ride..

Laird was docked long enough to join us for the Century. One hundred miles doesn't bother him in the least. He's talking about a bicycle tour around Alaska with his family. What a wonderful story a trip like that will make! After Laird so carefully pointed out stinging nettles to me last summer, I didn't have the nerve to tell him that I accidentally wandered into a patch of nettles a couple of weeks ago---Don't speculate why, Chris!

Hey Chris, we waited all day for you to come by. Somehow Rosanne's word that you're working weekends just isn't good enough. I remember last year and the whole gang waiting in the City Park for Chris to get back! Those guys that do 100 miles are crazy!

Someday soon I'll probably go back to riding my old balloon-tired bike through the
woods, stopping to spread out a. blanket and read a book for the afternoon. No more ex-
pensive equipment and RPM's and miles per day. Just go back to where it all. started from
and let the rest be a distant memory.

Racing Report

RESULTS

April was a great month for Phil and me. We both took home lots of prizes.
On the last weekend in March the final Issaquah training race was held. This was a
handicap race; the Category three riders started five minutes ahead of the twos, and the
twos five minutes before the ones. The Category three pack totally disintegrated, demol-
ished by the fast pace. The twos were never caught by the ones and won the race. I got
second in the Category one pack sprint.

The next Saturday was miserable during the morning. The organ-
izers of the Volunteer Park Criterium couldn't seem to decide
whether to hold the Junior race or the Category three race first.
I nearly froze to death during the controversy. The threes
went first. Our strongest finisher was Tod Slavik; who
just barely missed placing.

The Junior race was dominated by Canadians and Oregon- ians; by the last few laps in the race I was the only one from Washington remaining in contention. On the last lap there were only six riders left in the pack; everyone else had been burned off by the blistering pace. I put another notch

in my saddle after my victory in the sprint. A

The Joe Matava Memorial Road Race was held on the next day. The weather was just’ as miserable. In the threes race Bill got seventh just out of the prizes. The ones and twos races were combined in a handicap race. The ones never caught the twos. Phil got about tenth. It rained during the seventy-two mile race and by the end of it all of the riders looked like living mud statues.

It cleared up a bit during the Junior race. Joe Matava was a Junior, and I am convinced this had something to do with it. The pack stayed together throughout the race.. in the sprint I was beaten by about one quarter of a wheel by a Canadian rider.

entered a seventy-two mile train-

ing race. One of my spokes broke while I was off the front and started beating against my
frame. After I stopped and wrapped it around some other spokes, I found myself off the
back. t chased for twenty miles but never was able to catch. Phil took fifth in the
sprint.

On the twenty-third I was a traitor to our Club and went to Canada instead of to our Century. I was lured by a large prize list; they had about eight hundred dollars’ worth. How could I resist? The race became very-confusing because they had the ones

caught us. They were going faster since their race was twenty miles shorter than ours.
The situation that followed can briefly be described as total confusion; it could also
be described in about ten pages. 1 took home prizes when I ended up with fifth place,
so I still liked the race!
