We will be getting new club jerseys this
spring through Gary Singleton. Sugeestions for
colors and styles will be appreciated. Also,
we might have a silk-screening "party" so that

whatever. Again, artitistic talent is needed.

Bike Trips

As I write this, I think of the excellont articles by Jack and Mary Ann and realize that Jack's folksy articles are sorely needed, and WE HOPE THAT SEVERAL CLUB MEMBERS WILL WRITE AN ARTICLE CR TWO DURING THE YAR ABOUT THEIR SrRCTAL IM STS (emphasis added), Ken and Mary, Steve and Phyllis do so much cam we feel sure they have a lot of valvable advice for the rest of us. <A few tips on maintenance, gear charts, and how to select a bicycle or true a wieel from some of the bike mechanics would add a lot oe. we hope some of them can find time to give us their advice.

The big bicycling news is the upcoming Seattle-to-Portland ride. So far we have heard that Mark Overfield, Weldon’ Burke, Mick Cole, Ernie McAtee, and BLLL Ripple are planning to ride the full distance as singles. Kirk Kirkland and Nancy Glemens, Lisa Loran and I will be riding on tandems. We hope there are others we haven't heard about, ‘Those planning to ride the 200-plus miles will be going into training soon, and as the final weeks approach, the training will step up to about 20 hours a week at 20 or so miles per hour.

The Seattle~to-Portland ride has several goals. Foremost will be holding
an event that racers, tourists, and casual bicyclists can all participate in
and enjoy. Another goal is to establish the best bicycle route between Seattle
and Portland. A tnuird goal is to publicize the bicycle as transportation and
fun. Seattlo-to-~Portland is going to illustrate very clearly that both speed
aod endurance are dependent on how many miles you are able to ride. We hope
the spring touring schedule can include the lunch stops so that the bicyclists
in training for racing, the Daffodil Century, Seattle-tow-Portland, and
television viewing (?) can all get together at the ride mid-point for the _
friendliness and companionship that makes ovr organization the unique, friendly
club we all love.

"Just a Few Moderate Inclines ..."

February seemed to be the month for hill-climbing on our rides.. Mary Ann
took us on a tour of Vashon Island, with brunch at the Spinnaker Restaurant.
Ve found out way the club never goes on the west side of the island! Well, a
little bit of hill-walking brings back the circulation in my feet. I always
enjoy a Vashon ride; it's beautiful and challenging - with some exhilarating
dowm-hill stretchos, of course. Then we had a typical race to catch the forry
back, and we got there as the cars started aboard. Apparently not aware that
Silea pumps are not disposable, Frank dropped his overboard.

ai The following week, Mick proved that he really does seek out hills with a vide around the Olalla. neighborhood. I missed that one. I guess that Steve Newton's Frostbite Tour the night before proved to be too strenuous.

The hill-climbing practice paid off as Frank and I towred Bainbridge Island on the tandem on the Chilly Hilly Century. Although not an ideal tandon course, we enjoyed the roller-coaster ride! I overheard someone say thet 275 bikies wio weren't afraid of molting came out, each receiving a bonus of free hot cider and a custom patch. Actually, the weather was quite pleasant for nost of the rido, until I thought spring was finally here and put on riding shorts. The last time around the course, I was glad that Chilly Hilly only comes once a yoar. Buta short time later, sipping a beer on the ferry, I was alteady thinking of how I might do it next year.
