Autumn leaves and crisp mornings remind us that it's time to dig out wool jerseys, leg warmers, rain gear, and bicycle lights. It's also about time for elections ... an appropriate time to define the nature and goals of our club.

Every successful club must project some sort of public image and make an effort to maintain that image, according to an interesting article in the September League of American Wheelmen Bulletin. But the image we now project is confusing, at best. I hope that part of the next. few meetings can be devoted to discussion of bicycling programs that will interest our members.

During our formative years we treasured our friendly, family atmosphere. Jack
Williams, Steve Perret, Dan Feldhaus, Eldon and Virginia Stratton, Ray and Ann
Sumner, the Bob Branson family, Stuart and Polly Crook ... all devoted time and
effort to make each and every member of the club feel needed and treasured. Most
rides were leisurely and devoted to enjoyment of our Washington environment,
rather than to bicycling skills.

As our club matured, many members became extremely proficient and highly
specialized riders and our emphasis shifted from group family rides to small
groups of specialized bicycling. Eventually, the casual, weekend bicyclist was
made to feel hopelessly outclassed.

The time has come to decide if we will develop programs for a small group of elitists, try to restore our friendly family image ... or just drift.
