The New Year has started off with a bang; the awards banquet
was a huge success. Mary Ann picked a winner with the Barvarian
restaurant and Lisa's humorous awards capped off: the evening just
right. We were also glad to see some fresh faces in Jerry, Mickey
and Clare at the banquet and we're really looking forward to seeing
them on a ride soon.
Ruth Weldon has contacted the Fircrest Community Center for a
new meeting room. They have better facilities, a room that we can
use for pot luck dinners, a publication that provides free adver-
tisement,.and they seem anxious to have us. The board of directors
will make a decision at their next meeting and announce their decision
at the general meeting.
Mark has held a meeting of the racers and they too are off toa
running start. Mark stressed the areas where better cooperation
and communication between the touring section and racing section can
help us all promote bicycling, which is the purpose of our club.
Mark and Kirk are exploring the possibilities of a time trial
course. This is another activity that deserves ovr full support. A
measured time trial allows one to evaluate both equipment and his or
her own, physical fitness program. After all, physical fitness is
one of the benefits we expect from bicycling, so an activity that
helps us to measure our progress is certainly worthwhile.
Bruce Rushton twisted my arm until it nearly broke to get this
article and it was already sore from the arm-twisting Jack gave me
to lead rides. Congratulations to both of you. Keep up the good
work. With Jack and Bruce on the job we will be known as the best
one-armed bicycle club in town.

Racing Report
I want to thank the racers that attended our meeting. I feel severs] important objectives were accombdlished, some of which were: time triels will be held on every Tuesday at 6:30 PM. These will start later on in the year when davlicht permits; if at all possible either a road race or criterium will be enonanred by the team; a racers’ bulliten board will be instelled at Singleton's Cyclery, it will contain current racing news; a racers’ membership list will be sent out to the racers so es to permit training rides with racers in the same caterory; the racers will ronitor a check point during the Daffodil Century; snd training rides will start on Saturday, Feb- ruary 9th and will continue until further notice. Nine o'clock AM is the starting time at the Point Defiance Park entrance.
Agcein I ask you, if you have any ideas on how to better the
team or club, let me know. If it has potentiel and will profit either
the members of the club or the team, I will "push" the idea to the
fullest extent.
Food for thought: I did not climb the mountain because it was
there, but because I was there!
Riding tip: If t':e gear you have selected is too high, your legs
will fatigzve before your lunes. If the selected gear is too low,
your lunes will fatigue first.
Train don't strain,
P.S. Training races will be held at Issaquah on March 23 and 30.

Sunday morning, January 6th. As it was cold and frosty with
patches of ice here and there, I was amazed to find 18 hardy bicycle
riders at the Wright Park Conservatory, all eager to go on Mary Ann
Wilson's ride to Point Defiance.
These were not all hard core veterans either! Some hadn't
been on a ride for months. Two were with well-~bundied children in
child carriers.
Leaving the Conservatory and circling the park, the route led out North Yakima, which, by the way, is a bike route to the Point. Passing the old Weyerhauser Mansion, we suzdenly ran into a patch of glare ice. The first one to hit it was Steve Lay, who immediately took a tumble to the pavement, fortunately not hurting himself. The rest of us quickly stopped and walked our bikes past the bad spot. Thanks for the warning, Steve!
At the Point we all stored our bicycles on the dock for safe- keeping and crowded into the restaurant for clar chowder and coffee. Their clam chowder is great and at $1.00 for a large bowl is quite reasonable. While there we met Bill and Ruth Dougherty. Bill is one of our past vice-presidents. I'm sure that almost everyone knows Bill and the famous slide shows of his European bicycle trips.
Because of the dangerous ice and bad road conditions, our lead- er decided not to take the five mile drive loop and we came back to town via the Smelter tunnel (no big deal), Schuster Parkway and to Mary Ann's apartment where we were served hot cider and all kinds of goodies like salmon ball dip and chips, chocolate petite fours and cookies. Mary, your hospitality and ride were just fabulous! Do it again. Soon. Please.
