THURSDAY NIGHT RIDES BEGIN THiS MONTH - SEE INSIDE FOR SCHEDULE:

Tacoma Wheelman's camping season got off to a gosd start with eleven brave souls daring enough to ride to Millersylvania State Park or March 28 and 296

. Ann, Tim, Eric, Chris, Scott, Andy, Charlie, Ken, Mary, Steve and Phyllis arrived
at UPS Fieldhouse on saturday mornire. (Weather MUCH warmer than last vear and
less snow!) After loading the bikes and a few minor adjustments we left by
8:30 AM, to be only as far as the bicycle shop on 38th and Yakima by 9:30AM.
Thanks to the TACOMA BIG@YCLH SHOP for their assistance in repairing a broken
cranks

After that we kept saving fairly well, getting to Roy about noon. Steve and I arrived in Roy a little later as we both had flats just outside of Roy. Steve hit a rock and I had to hit the same rock!

We got to Millersylvania without any other problems, except for Ken losing a rack bolt. Some of the group had gotten there earlier and talked to the ranger about using one of the kitchen areas to camp, We decided to camp at the kitchen area and Steve rode al] over the park looking for the ranger to tell him we wanted to use the area. When he could not find the ranger we decided to set up camp anyway. Sure enough, with three tents up and supper started, the ranger came to tell us that overnight camping was only allowed in kitchen #4 (which

was occupied by another group). and we would have to move te another campsite!

After setting up camp AGAIN, I decided to take a nice HOT 10¢ shower, I love the state parks here with the het showers for only 10¢. When I finished it was raining( what's new!), The rain and mist contirued al] evening, but everyone stayed dry under the tarps over the picnic tables. :

Because of the rain, we decided not to have a campfire and went to bed, carly.

Sunday morning looked clear and nice with the sun shinning. Before we started
breakfast it was raining BUCKETS, This continued all through breakfist and
breaking camp. (This is so you have heavy wet gear to carry on your bike and
then try to dry it when yon get home!)

The group split after breakfast with some leaving early, some going to Olympia and Ken, Mary, Charlie, Steve and I staying together.

The ride home was really a breeze, especially if you have 1 tallwind as we have
had the last two years!

We were at the Dupont exit before noon with the wind blowing us up the
Nisqually Hill.

The highlight of the ride home is a stop for donuts at the Donut Shop at Fort Lewis, After eating those goodies you need to ride up and down the Nisqually Hill at least two or three times to work off the calories,

We then toured the Museun at Fort Lewis, something we had never taken time to doy

This a shot, fairly easy tour that we have sone as our first camping trip the
last three years.

If anyone is interested in bicyclé camping, Steve and I will be happy to answer any questions and share any patterns if you would like to make your own gear.

General membership meetinas are held on the third Wednesday of each month at 7:30 pm at the Fircrest Community Center, which is located at 555 Contra Costa.

Bicvcle Action Committee meets on the last Wednesday of each month at the Y.M.C.A, Contact Fric Wuersten at 272-3544 for more information. At this month's General Hembership Citb Meeting Eric Wuersten will present @ slide show on touring the Pacific coast.

TUESDAY TIME TRIALS

The North Levey Road Time Trials that were so popular last year are going to be held again this year. They will be held on Tuesdays with the first rider off at 6:30. The start will be the same place as last

year, on the Puyallup end.
