month at the Fircrest Community Center, which is located at 555
Contra Costa. Bicycle Action Commitee meets on the last Wednesday
of each month at the Y.M.C.A. Contact Eric Wuersten for more

The cycling season is finally upon us. The weather is finally beginning to cooperate and upcoming rides look really good: i hope to see a lot of Tacoma Wheelmen gracing the streets of Tacoma especially on the Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday rides

I recently took a week long trip to Eugene Oregon and
back. Also on the trip was Matt Detering, a long time friend
and new member of the Tacoma Wheelmen. WE had an excellent time,
as the weather, people, and scenery combined to make for an
unbeatable vacation of about 650 miles.

We'd been planning for this vacation for abuot three weeks
before our departure date,however,my mom was making several wise
remarks about our unpreparedness as we packed to leave on Sunday
April 12. We had originally planned to leave by no later than
7 AM, but several mechanical and packing problems delayed us
until abuot 4 PM. Our lateness worked to our advantage however,
as we avoided the rain, hail, and occasional snow storm which
all magically ended at about 3:30.

We made a grand total of 12 miles that afternoon spending the first night of the trip at the house of a friend of Matt's I was more than happy to stop as my new Brooks Pro saddle was beginning to make a real "impression on me".

: Up bright and early the next eens we set off at 6:15

on the road to Portland. It was unuassually cold and everything was covered in frost. The sky was deep bluethough, and we soon warmed up. This partly due to the sun and-partly from our own Herculean efforts to propel our heavily loaded bicycles. My bike was significantly lighter than Matt's; unable to live without the comforts of home, he had brought along a pillow and even

a change of clothes for every day.

We proceeded down 507 to chehalis,without incident, then
headed to Winlock via 603, once ther we enjoyed the Highland
Resturaunt's world famous cinnamin rolls. Large, hot, and
delicious,the pastrys were covered with tons of butter and
were very effective at silencing our growling stomachs.
thus fortified we covered the remaining 30 miles to the
Oregon border.
