TACOMA WHEELMEN'S CLUB

NEWSLETTER — FEBRUARY 1985

Tacoma Wheelmen’s Club
PO. Box 99555
Tacoma, WA 98499

Please take note of the

statement of cash receipts and
disbursements. This will answer
many of the questions that you

may have about what the club does
with the money that it makes.
With this report as a guideline,
the board has prepared ai budget
for 1985 that will leave
$2,000.00 in its treasury at the
end of the year. We feel that
this is vital because of the up

front costs involved in putting
on the banquet and the Daffodil
Classic. Since the Daffodil

provides us with almost Sox of

our yearly receipts, we cannot
short change this event.
A new area in the 1985 Budget

is the addition of promotional receipts. We are planning on a large multi-shirt sale. The proceeds from this effort will be used to finance community service projects. On top of our project list is a hotline and an

education program. Look for more
information on this later.
For those of you whoa have hung

up your bikes for the winter, the

1985 cycling season officially
begins on Feb. 24 with Chilly
Hilly. We are going to carpool

from Tacoma (Swayze Library - éth
& Skyline) to Winslow. I would

RIDES SCHEDULED FOR BICYCLE USA
__ 1985 SANCTIONED PATCH SERIES

The first verse from Woody
Guthrie’s song, "This Land is Your
Land", is the theme for the Bicycle

USA 1985 Sanctioned Fatch Series.

Like the 1984 "Ameri¢a the
Beautiful" patches, each patch in
the colorful 1985 series is

one-quarter of an oval and * shows a
scene from the song’s first verse.

The quarter-century patch
depicts cyclists near a country
village, with the words "This land

is your land, This land is my land".
The half-century shows the Golden
Gate Bridge and Statue of Liberty,
with the lines, "From California to

the New York Island". The metric century theme is "From the redwood forest to the Gulf Stream waters". On the century patch a cyclist riding by a farm shows that "This land was made for you and me". Bicycle USA sanctioned patches

must be earned on rides sponsored by
LAW-affiliated clubs, such as
T.W.C., and may be purchased from
the club for %2 each.

To earn your 1985 sanctioned
patches, join Lori Eing and Sue
Given on the second Saturday of each
of the next four months. The
25-mile ride will be on February 29,
the 50-mile on March 9, the 100km on
April 13, and the 100-mile on May
11. The "This Land is Your Land"
patches look great and we know you
will want to add them to your
collection. Check your newsletter
for time and place and join us on
February 9 for the first ride.

Committee Meeting

The first committee meeting for
the Tenth Annual Daffodil Classic
will be held at Steve Lay’s ,1320 N.
Cedar, on Thursday Feb. 7th at

7:00PM. Everyone who wants to work
is welcome. This is an important
meeting, a lot of major descisions

will be made.

Seattle To Host Conference

Seattle has been chosen to host
the next ProBike conference to be
held in 1986.

The event will bring bicycle
activists from all over the world to

Seattle to discuss and plan all
aspects of bicycling.
More details on this exciting

event as they become available.

Notes From Touring Captains

We want to thank everyone who

led rides during 1984. We had many
exciting rides with new ideas from
Davis Tours, and a new "“high" in
trundling from Steve.

We want to make 1985 even
better! We have made a ride form
for ride leaders to fill out.

Hopefully this form will answer many
of the questions Bikies have about
the ride. This is a easy form--see
Tour Captains or an Officer for the
form to describe your ride.
