Many of us will be gathering at the Doric Tacoma Hotel for our annual banquet on Sat., Feb. 8th. It promises to be an enjoyable and entertaining evening. Awards will be given to members for their con- tributions to the club, for their many miles ridden, and to highlight some of the lighter moments of the past year. The Bicycle Federation of
Washington is sponsoring Substitute

House Bill 771 to create a state
bicycle coordinator position for the
state of Washington. Funding would
be $70,000, half coming ‘from the
general fund and half from gas tax
monies. Voting will be taking place
in the state House and Senate in
February and early March.

Tacoma Wheelmen and other interested people are currently talking with the county govern- ment to possibly set up a bicycle advisory committee. The 1985 cash receipts and disbursements statement along with the budget are presented on this page. The Board will be setting the 1986 budget using these figures at its Feb. 3rd meeting. Members are welcome to attend.

Our 1985 T-shirt sale was a
huge success! We made $864 to be
used exclusively for community
service, and have $789 left. This
amount is included in the $3082 cash
balance at December 31, 1985.

Overall we came out ahead of
budget, with$2293 available to begin
1986. Also, membership at yearend
was 234, counting 2 people per
family membership.

Enclosed in your January news- letter was the 1986 L.A.W. Calendar of Washington Bicycling Events. Terry and Lori King of our Tacoma Wheelmen's Club were instrumental in the compilation of this information which enables riders to plan well in advance for big events and which helps reduce the possibility of 2 major rides being scheduled on the same day.

Roger Humphrey, a co-editor of
the Vancouver Bicycle Club newsletter,
wrote an article on the meeting that
was held to compose this calendar
and on the efforts of Terry and Lori,
Unfortunately it did not get into
the hands of this newsletter editor
until after publication of the Jan.
issue. The following excerpts
reprinted from Roger's article would
have been more timely in last month's
newsletter, but better late than
not at all!

"The first weekend in November, Pat and I went up to Everett, WA for a meeting. This was no ordinary meeting of great minds and nimble bodies (although of course those were there or was that nimble minds and great bodies?). The purpose was to set up a calendar of bicycling events for our state. This was organized by Terry and Lori King of the Tacoma Wheelmen and came off very well. This is the third year for this calendar, and it started from somewhat more humble beginnings than this year's attendance would suggest.

This was done under the auspices of the League of American Wheelmen although membership in the League wasn't necessary; it so happens that Terry King is one of the two League representatives for the state. Like several things, this event's roots sprang from some of John Kelley's grousing. He was complaining to Terry a few years back that there was no good way for him to keep track of all the cycling events he

wanted to attend in the state and
said that there should be a calen-
dar of statewide events. Either

he inspired Terry and Lori or
shamed them into action and an ever
more complete calendar and greater
club participation has been the
worthwhile result.

Instead of meeting in Tacoma this year, the Everett club - B.I.K.E.S., hosted the two day's activities. Many clubs that weren't there had sent in their rides so there was representation of cities like Spokane and Portland, too. Terry gave us some of the sordid

history of this event and told us

Todd Littman of Bicycle Feder- ation of Washington spoke on his organization's goals and workings. Then for the tour de force, Harry Stavart, chairman of R.A.W., gave a presentation on the history and plans for the Ride Around Washing- ton.

Bob and Patsy King of Everett and B.I.K.E.S. (no kin to Terry and Lori, just bicycles on the brain) had organized much of the weekend and provided the out-of-towners with several host houses where they could stay overnight.

The chance to meet all these folks was reward enough, but knowing that many of you will benefit from our combined efforts over the coming year and that we will see more of you at our respective events as a result.makes it even better.”

SPACE 86 GETTING GEARED UP

(Spokes People Against Cancer Event)

will be held July 26 and 27, 1986, and help is needed now to plan this event. Riders obtain sponsorships to assist in the crusade against cancer and in turn get to enjoy a weekend consisting of a bicycle ride, Amtrak train ride, boat ride, good food, and good friendship. All those who participated in SPACE 85 found it to be a fun and rewarding event. The committee for planning SPACE 86 . will be meeting Tues. Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. at the American Cancer Society office, 515 So. "M'' St., Tacoma. We need more ‘terested individuals to work on this mmittee to insure a big success again this year. PUYALLUP SHORELINE The City of Puyallup is making plans for future develop- ment of the Puyallup River shore- line within the city limits. These plans may include pedestrian trails, bicycle trails, and other facilities. It looks like a very challenging project! The next meeting of the Advisory Task Force will be 7 p.m., Tues. Feb. 4, at the Puyallup Senior Center, 212 W. Pioneer in Puyallup. Interested persons are welcome to attend. Sue Given

We will hear about resources and infor- mation obtained at a seminar held in Seattle, and we will begin to plan slide shows that our club can share with other organizations who are interested in cycling and safety. • - The RIDE CODE tells the quick
