Fram your vice-presioent, Boo Myrick...
Since becoming a member of TWC, two of my friends have been seriously injured on their bikes. One friend violated the
laws of physics on a 90 degree turn. the result being a severely fractured arm. My other friend was run down by an
errant motorist on a highway shoulder that appeared to be a very safe bike route. The result in this case was a fractured
pelvis, back damage and more.
| my head when | was three. When | was twelve, | tried to propel my body from the basement through the first floor using |
|---|---|---|---|
| an old bed as a trampoline. At sixteen, | rolled my first car over and used my head to cushion the rest of my body. | ||
| Several more concussions have followed these early experiences and now | try to avoid this method of education. |
Recently, | saw an article in Triathalon Today entitled “On Being Spattered and Knowledge Therefrom.” It has occurred to
me that there may be another, less painful method of learning: using the experience of others. There were four pieces of
advice 1n the article:
- Wear a helmet. Feel ashamed of yourself and your friends if you ever, ever ride without a helmet. Last year, | got to
See a motorcyclist on our Peninsula Metric Ride route who splattered his bare head into the pavement. Having ants in
your brain tissue can be fatal.
2. Learn the importance of uninsured.‘under insured materist ceverage (UM). \t is cheap and available through your personal automobile insurance company. UM coverage acts as the other guy's liability insurance if he has none and as Supplemental insurance if he does not have enough. It usually applies to you in case some idiot in a car runs over you while you're on your bike. You should get at least $100,000 of UM coverage. Ask to be sure, but virtually all UM policies cover you if you are injured in or by any motor vehicle.
3. Learn the impartance ef medical payments coverage \f you have no other medical insurance, # you don't have salary insurance. or if you don't have about six to twelve months of sick leave. get at least $25,000 of this stuff because it 1s cheap, too. It acts as a protective type of insurance which pays up to the policy limit for your medical expenses without regard to fault. Most of the time, it can be used for living expenses between the time of your injury and your return to work. Ask to be sure if it covers lost wages. Mine covers from the fifth week to the fiftieth week of the injury. When you are unable to work, this stuff is very valuable. If you have loved ones at home, consider the accidental death coverage in your automobile coverage. It will apply if you are killed by a vehicle whether biking, walking, or running. 4. if yeu are riding solo, hight yourself up hke a Christmas free. Consider one of those big flags. They look funy, but that’s the idea. Maybe the inattentive motorist will look at you. Wear a reflective vest, even during daylight hours. Attach a flashing yellow strobe light on you or on your bike. They weigh about four ounces. That's a lot lighter than a four thousand pound truck wrapped around your seat post.
All of this advice presumes that you have at least some good Major medical insurance coverage. Conventional disability coverage is expensive and usually is loopholed with exceptions and qualifications. My friend who fractured his arm (without being hit by a car, fortunately) had good major medical insurance coverage. There is obviously an opportunity here for insurance companies to offer appropriate bike insurance coverage for those of us who wish to protect ourselves from road accidents.
That's it for this month. Three people got hurt and | learned
something. Hopefully, none of us will have to experience
these things first hand.
