Angle Lake Cyclery will bring at least four unusual bikes to our meeting and discuss their advantages. They will probably have a Counterpoint tandem, a recumbent, a Moulton and a folding bicycle. You can read about the Moulton in April's Bicycling Magazine. If you come early you may be able to test ride one of the bikes!

April Ride Notes:

April is Daffodil Classic month. Volunteers who may not
have time to ride both Daffodil routes on the day of the ride
a ride one or both of them on our pre-rides, April 9 and

Our first camping trip this year is scheduled for April 22 and
23, spending Saturday night at Kanascat-Palmer State Park.
Bring your favorite fireside stories and maybe your rain
gear to keep the liquid sunshine away.

If you don't see your favorite ride on this month's schedule,
give me a call at 565-0535, and we'll schedule you for May.

According to the Bicycle Federation of Washington, only a
small portion of the money for building and maintaining local

treets and roads comes from fuel taxes. The majority of cal road funds come from property and sales tax.

An estimated 95% of all bicycling takes place on local roads.
Because bicycles are light, efficient vehicles, their impact on
roads is very small. it 1s clear that bicyclists are paying
their fair share of road costs.

We will get clean, wide, properly marked shoulders as more
of us begin to use the roads. Public officials are beginning to
realize these improvernents promote use, increase traffic
safety and reduce congestion.

BIKE MAINTENANCE CLASSES
Bicycle Maintenance: Learn basic repairs that can be done

on the road or in your garage. 1 session at Snake Lake
Nature Center on Thurs., April 20(7- 10pm) for ages 14 to

Bicycle Helmet Safety Project

“Communities for Child Safety", a Pierce County group
whose purpose is to make communities safe for children,
has chosen bicycle helmet safety as their first project. The
goal is to increase bicycle helmet use by children of ages
between five and twelve.

The campaign, which will begin May 1st, consists of two parts: education about prevention of bicycle related head injuries airned at parents, teachers, physicians and children, and a coupon program to make purchasing helmets easier. Materials for use in schools, doctor's offices, emergency rooms and by individuals will be available. The Pierce County team will function as a speakers bureau to speak to community groups and to provide materials for others wishing to speak on this issue.

The coupon program will use an existing program offered
through local bike shops by Protec, a helmet manufacturer,
as well as one funded with community support that will offer
further discounts on helmet purchases.

Support and guidance in development of the Pierce County project is being provided through the Harborview Injury Prevention and Research Center. A similar Helmet Safety Project has been going in King County for two years.

As a fellow cyclist and TWC member, | ask your support of the Communities for Child Safety Bicycle Helmet Project. The Tacoma Wheelmen members, by wearing helmets and practicing good riding protocol, provide valuable role models for the community. We can help non-cyclists understand what bicycle safety means by showing them, just as we teach our children about bicycle safety by wearing helmets when we ride and by insisting they do the same.

Help Pierce County learn how to be “HEAD SMART.” Wear your helmet when you ride, support efforts in local schools to promote helmet safety, mention your support of coupon programs to local bike shops and thank them for their participation. Thank you for your support!
