Thursday Night Rides are Back!
It’s SPRINGTIME... and time for our Thursday Night Bike Rides. Join us every Thursday evening for an easy ride of 8 to 12 miles, often with an ice cream stop along the way. Ride leaders will have at least two cue sheets, so someone can “sweep” at the end of the group.
Our first two Thursday Night Bike Rides will meet and begin a half-hour early, so we can have more
daylight. Here is the May 1989 schedule:

May is National Bike Month. Here are some of the ways you
can get involved:
May 17 - Bike-to-Work Day. Wednesday, May 17, has
been declared National Bike-to-Work day. if you've never
tried bicycle commuting, this is your chance. Several of our
members are already commuting by bike (distances ranging
from 2 1/2 to 9 miles, one way). You, too, can save money
(no gasoline costs), help ease our pollution woes (no
emissions), and improve your health {regular exercise). Just
remember to ride safely (and assertively), be visible, and
follow all the rules of the road. ENJOY! -
Any day - Invite a friend out for a bike ride. Besides the
exercise, it’s a great social ee (While you're riding,
invite them to join TWC, too).
Right now - Join the League of American Wheelmen, a national advocacy organization for bicyclists. Support their actions, as they support safer and better cycling for us. Call our LAW members for membership information: Diane Lister (752-8638): Sue Given (565-0535): Steve and Phyllis Lay (759-1816). PS. LAW has a membership Campaign going on now....both you and our club have the opportunity to win some nice prizes (bikes, gift certificates, accessories, etc.) JOIN! :
With a little imagination and effort, you can come up with your own ideas for creating bicycle awareness during National Bike Month. More than anything else,
get out and ride.
‘Your membership in the TWC brings a wealth of benefits. Every member receives our monthly newsletter with its
- - the mail, everyone gets The Northwest Cyclist, a newspaper
- - published in the region for local bicyclists. All members also
- - enjoy a 10% discount on parts and accessories at most of
- - Tacoma’s bike shops (see related article).
- - Our more active members benefit from our many social
- - events: the picnic, the Halloween party, the Christmas party
- - (all free of charge) and the annual banquet (at a reasonable
- - price). By going on rides and signing in, or keeping your ride
- - log, you can earn an embroidered patch commemorating your
- - mileage for the year. Members are also entitled to discount
- - oe at both the Daffodil Classic and the Peninsula
- - etric.
- - There's more, and it all adds up to a lot of value for your
- - $10 membership, and even more so for your $ 12.50 family
- - membership. :
- - One of the valuable membership benefits of the Tacoma
- - Wheelmen’s Club is the 10% discount on parts and
- - accessories, currently offered by 8 shops in Tacoma. The
- - following is an alphabetical listing of those shops, and a little
- - of what you can find at each. ;
- - BRIDGEPORT CYCLERY...8819 Bridgeport Way SW, Tacoma
- - 98499 (588-2245) Their standard lines are Trek, Raleigh
- - and Schwinn. They specialize in “unique” bikes like the
- - Moulton, the Montague folding bike, Terry bikes (for women)
- - recumbents and tandems.
CONSIDER COMMUTING BY BUS by Bob Myrick, Vice-President
Are you concerned about air pollution, the greenhouse effect, traffic gridlock or loss of the ozone layer? Do you have more time than money? Would you consider commuting by bus? a If you have a “beater” bike or if you are a brave sort, think about riding your bike to a Park-and-Ride lot and taking the bus or joing a carpool. The idea 1s simple. You want exercise, you want to save money, and you want to preserve the earth.
Consider riding your bike from one to ten miles to the lot. Take the bus or carpool as close to your workplace as possible. Then, you may have to walk up to a mile or two to get to work. You might even have another “beater” bike tied up near work.
Leaving your bike at the Park-and-Ride lot is the first step towards having “Bikes on Buses’. We must demonstrate to transit
officials a large interest in the use of transit before we can ever hope to take our bikes on the bus for strictly recreational
purposes.
Our own Pierce Transit would like to help you use your bike to get to work. Pierce Transit offers a carpool service to find
commuter companions and there are now 17 Park-and-Ride lots in Pierce County. These lots also have convenient bus service.
To find out more, call Pierce Transit at 581-8000, and a customer service representative will help you plan your great
adventure.

Tides on the front page.
We nearly drowned in the rain, but we're still going! You can still earn a complete set of the colorful L.A.W. patches celebrating cycling in America. The patches form quarters of an oval and present cycling scenes on a map of America. They must be earned on rides sponsored by L.A'W.-affiliated clubs, such as T.W.C, and may be purchased from the Club for
$2 each.
In Mav we'll ride for the 25-mile and 100-kilometer (62-mile) patches. Check the ride schedule for specifics,
and join us!
Special thanks to the T.\W.C. volunteers who so quickly distributed the 1989 Seattle-to-Portland registration forms: Lyle Mains, Ray Mains, Jim Davis, Sylvia Montague, zane Taylor, Phyllis Lay, and Linda Walter.
STP registration forms are still available. Call me at
565-0535 if you need one.

Get your reservation in early for the privilege of working a
checkpoint on the 7th Annual Peninsula Metric. We have
available a choice of 4 checkpoints and the registration
table. Call Greg Grenier (752-4348) or Karen Whitney
(565-2742).
This ride will be for learning how to ride trails on your mountain bike. You should already feel comfortable with the basics of riding, stopping, shifting, etc. before joining this ride. We'llride for 1 1/2 - 2 hours with at least one true off-the-bike rest. Helmets will be required on this ride. Glasses or goggles as well as gloves are also recommended. Cautious, safe, polite riding protocel will be expected, so that we don’t lose the privilege of riding these trails. Come discover the peaceful deep woods available right in our backyard. Meet May 6, 1:30pm, in the Zoo parking lot.
Approximately 10,000 bicycle riders will soon be riding the 10th Annual Seattle-to-Portland Classic, ready for food, water, juice, and a friendly welcome from the Tacoma Wheelmen’s Club at the first checkpoint, in Spanaway. Our club will set up the checkpoint, put out lots of “carbo- loaded” foods, provide general assistance and share in all the excitement of this BIG event.
You'll have plenty of fun and will be kept busy setting out
food just as fast as riders can stuff it in their mouths or
jersey pockets. Come hear all the exciting stories of their
first 50 miles of the route. Souvenir hats will be given to
all volunteers.
Come for one or both days, for either the entire time {approximately 5:30 am. - 3:30 pm. Friday, June 23rd; approximately 5:30 am. - 11 am. Saturday, June 24th) or part of the time. if you're riding STP in one day on Saturday, come volunteer Friday and get more “geared-up” for the ride. That way you'll get a chance to preview the food.
To sign up, please call Richard and Linda Walter
(383-3974) or Paula Napier (475-2131).
PS. Please note that the checkpoint will be in a new (but
nearby) location in Spanaway this year. Further details will
be announced in the June newsletter.
