Program: “Biking in the Big Apple”
Jim Fredrickson, TWC member

Jim will take us on a slide show adventure featuring “The Five Borough Tour” of New York City. This ride attracts some 30,000 riders from all over the world. He will then take us to New York's Long Island and “The Montauk Century” ride, which traverses the length of the island. Jim will also show us some of the highlights of other riding adventures he was lucky enough to do while on the east coast.

MOUNTAIN BIKE RIDE EVERY SUNDAY
Eric Eaton is leading a ride every Sunday for mountain bikers.

The meeting place is Northwest Bikes at 15219 Pacific Avenue.

Notice of Proposed By-Laws
Change

7 TWC Helps with County
Transportation Plan

At the October TWC meeting, Chris Beckman of Pierce County's Planning Department presented our membership with a report on the status of the County's future transportation plans. He distributed copies of the Pierce County Transportation Plan Policy Document to all members present, and explained that this document is not about specific projects, but is a description of what the county will be looking for in future projects. Chris emphasized that he is very sympathetic to the concerns of bicyclists and plans to give those concerns considerable weight as projects are designed and built.

TWC members were then given a chance to mark, on county maps, those routes that are considered especially 1 tant to bicyclists. Those routes will be given considerat

when the county plans shoulder stripes, maintenance
schedules, and related issues.

TWC appreciates the opportunity to give the county input
regarding cyclist's needs. We also hope that our input is
given appropriate attention when the time comes to actually
build the county's roads.

Bicycle Use in Pt. Defiance Park

In response to a recent letter from Bob Myrick to Park
Commissioner Jerry Thorpe, the following policy regarding
trail bike riding in Pt. Defiance was brought to our attention:
The Board is continuing the policy of allowing foot traffic only
on the trail system in the park, and limiting bicyclists to the
roadways. They feel that increased traffic caused by cycling
would lead to an increase in damage to the environment in
the park's forest zone. The Park District is planning to
improve the situation for cyclists in the park by creating a
bike lane along most of the roadways in the park, and the
entire five-mile drive area is closed to vehicles on Saturday
mornings, as a courtesy to cyclists and walkers.

The Park Board is also looking into the possibility of provid- ing for bicycle trail riding in other facilities which they feel aren't as environmentally sensitive as Pt. Defiance. They hope to identify some alternatives in the near future.
