The Committee reports that all is going well in the planning stages, and the time has now come to sign up all those day-of-ride volunteers. BICYCLE FIT AND
BIKE MAINTENANCE

are the topics for our May club meeting.

Harvey Lister will share his knowledge of fitting a bicycle to the rider, based on the research of the Fit Kit. He will also help us learn the One Minute bike check, to ensure that our bicycles are always safe and ready to ride. Don’t miss this informative and valuable meeting, to be held on Tuesday, May 15 at 7:00 pm at the Oakland Recreation Center.

The Oakland Center is located at 4020 South
31st Street. which is one block north of Center
Street, and 1 block east of Tyler. For those of
you who missed our new meeting location last
month, it is a wonderful location. The facility is
all ours (no noise from neighboring meeting
rooms) and we even have the use of a small
kitchen. Come join us!

On the question of why you joined the TWC, the
largest response was for going on organized rides.
This month we'll talk a bit about the survey results
pertaining to our club rides, ride calendar, and
ride codes.

Since our membership showed an interest in all
types of rides (one day to multiple day, short,
long, with or without a cue sheet, fast, slow), it’s
difficult to say that any one thing is best or worst
about our existing ride schedules. If anything, we
need to continue the diversity of rides and try to
have more of them! While Saturday and Sunday
were by far the most popular days to ride, a
significant number of responses showed interest in
weekday rides (Perhaps you could lead a mid-
week ride?) The ride code is easily understood,
but a large percentage would like to see the type
of terrain descibed along with the ride code. Ride
leaders should try to include this information
when signing up to lead a ride. Of some concern
was the number of people who did not ride more
than 5 club rides because they didn’t feel welcome.
Maybe we can all do our part to greet and talk
with each other on club rides, making everyone
feel more a part of the riding group. Another
concern expressed is that rides aren’t always what
the ride code implied. Ride leaders will need to
be cautious that they plan what level of ride it will
be and stick to it. It can be difficult with the
diversity of riding abilities found in the group, but
its worth the effort. Club riders are also
encouraged to choose rides that seem to fit their
riding style. Keep riding and enjoy yourselves!

Bicycle Advocacy Campaign Charts
Successes in 1989

The National Bicycle Policy Project (NBPP), a
joint effort involving Bikecentennial and the
Washington, D.C. based Bicycle Federation of
America, achieved several successes during 1989,
its inaugural year. For instance:

es Based on NBPP comments, unfavorable language
concerning bicycling was eliminated from the
National Park Service administrators’ policy
manual.

s _ NBPP affected the decision of the powerful Ameri-
can Association of State Highway & Transpor-
tation Officials (AASHTO) to create a non-
motorized group specifically to consider bicycle and
pedestrian issues.

=» Work was completed on developing over 250 miles
of new mountain-bike routes in the Lolo National
Forest. An accompanying map/informational bro-
chure will aid other national forests in managing
the burgeoning sport. -

« NBPP staff conducted workshops for Washington
state highway engineers on bicycle-friendly road
design.

In explaining the reasons for these and additional
accomplishments, John Williams, editor of Bike-
centennial’s Bicycle Forum, said, "Between the
staffs at Bikecentennial and the Bicycle Fede-
ration, we share more than 50 years of experience
in bicycle advocacy."

While it’s crucial to accomplish changes at the highest level, there may not be much the indivi- dual cyclist or bicycle club can do to affect national policy. "However, it’s just as vital to improve conditions for cycling at the local level," asserted Williams. "And it’s here that the indivi- dual can play a major role.”

Toward this end, the NBPP recently published a
new guide entitled Improving Local Con-
ditions for Bicycling. This brochure provides
valuable guidelines that communities can follow to
enhance the safety and enjoyment of those cycling
on city and rural roads.

TWC Board Mini-Minutes

he highlight of the meeting was the large amount}
of mail to be opened and responded to. The
following action might be of interest:

1. The TWC is purchasing a brick for the National Bicycle Center being built in Redmond, Washing- ‘on, at Marymoor Park. This facility will house an| ndoor velodrome and a major museum and archives devoted to the history and technology o} human powered vehicles. Site dedication i scheduled for the summer of 1990.

2. The TWC donated a free family membership to be used as a prize in the University of Puget Sound’s Health Fair. This prize will be part of a drawing for the University community who partici- pated in ongoing health and fitness activities.

. SR 509 (crossing the tideflats) is now in the draft EIS stage. A public hearing on the Draft EIS) lis scheduled for May 2, 1990. If we are to ensure|

that bicyclists have full access to whichever option hey choose, we must participate in this process.

~| The 8th Annual Peninsula Metric Century

Sunday, June 3, 1990

The Peninsula Metric offers you a choice of 20, 50 or 100 kilometer loops that lead you over the hills and dales of the beautiful Kitsap Peninsula. The tour begins at the Southworth Ferry terminal on Sun- day, June 3. Seattle riders may arrive via the Fauntleroy (West Seattle) Ferry. The course will be open from 7 AM to 5 PM.

Riders who pre-register can pur- chase ferry tickets for half price - $2.50 round trip - and also save $1.00 on the registration fee. Pre- registrations must be received by May 22. A Self- “addressed Stamped Envelope for ferry tickets must be included.

Day of ride registrations will be accepted beginning at 7
AM. Fees include refreshments, route map, and patch to
the first 500 registered riders.

In keeping with the deluxe TWC tradition, there will be four staffed checkpoints for your riding pleasure.

August 3rd - 5th, 1990

TOSRV-NW is a 195-mile three day bicycling Tour Of the Scenic River Valleys of DAY 1 = somites NorthWestem Washington State starting north of Marysville. The tour covers some of DAY 0 65 miles the most beautiful countryside in the Pacific Northwest, passing by many scenic lakes, DAY 3 = 50 miles rivers, and Puget Sound. Enjoy a small size ride that caters to you -- the cyclist.

This year we are continuing with the route that was offered new in 1989. This exciting route concentrates on great scenery on back roads wherever possible. The first night’s accommodation is at the KOA campground near Burlington, and the second night isn cabins at Comet Bay within easy walking distance of Deception Pass. Enjoy swimming pools both nights as well as beaches and rivers along the route.

WHAT YOU GET: Included are four meals, checkpoints with snacks, sag wagon, maps and cue sheets, Dan Henry arrow route markings, camping fees, swimming pool both nights, and ride souvenir. A TOSRV bicycling shirt is also included. Please select size below.

REGISTRATION & CONFIRMATION: Applications must be postmarked by June 11, 1990. However,
we filled up the ride weeks before the deadline last year and we expect to fill it even faster this year. The
number of riders must be limited to 100 so get your registration in early! To receive your confirmation
and other vital ride information, each registrant must enclose a stamped, self-addressed 4"x9" business
sized envelope (SASE).

REFUNDS: Requests for full refund must be in writing and postmarked by June 11, 1990. No requests
for refund will be accepted after that date. No-shows will not receive a refund. Only transfers of
registration can be made after June 11, but may be processed as late as the start of the ride. Refunds will
not be mailed until August 21st.

RIDE PREPARATION: Each rider is expected to be in good shape for this challenging 3-day ride. The terrain is mostly rolling but there are a few significant hilly sections as well. All riders MUST wear approved helmets and are expected to carry essential tools and first aid items.

Rules for participating in the National Bike Ride are as simple as the idea. "Any person of any age can

ride somewhere -- anywhere -- during this weekend. The beauty of the bicycle is that it can be ridden
almost anywhere and the beauty of this event is that you can participate anywhere -- at home, on vacation,
even on the way to work."
